My thoughts on…poverty
October 15th 2008 -
As some of you may know, today is Blog Action day, and I’m a participant. Here’s my contribution.
As the name above suggests, I’m posting about poverty (duh!). It wasn’t the most pleasant post topic, as I couldn’t put my usual spin on it. And I couldn’t think of much to post on poverty. I mean, I live a pretty comfortable life. In fact, I just got my pay today, which was more than many adults’ for the hours I worked. I have the privilege of a college education, and so forth. So I was struggling to post on something I didn’t have much experience with. But as I typed on, I realized just how wrong I was. As I boarded the bus, I remember that a young boy asked me for money. Politely, I might add.
Sitting on the bus driving through the capital, I saw many homeless people and window washers. And I realized just how apathetic I had become to the issue of poverty, and I felt a little ashamed of myself. When did I become so numb to the suffering of my fellow man? What happened to the little boy who wanted to house every homeless person and help every other poor person once he became rich? I guess it’s because I had my “blinders” on, and I know you do too. By “blinders” I mean our ambitions, our day-to-day affairs. we’re so caught in the rat race that we’ve become insensitive to the poverty-stricken in our own backyard. The purpose of this post isn’t to end poverty. Heavens no. One post won’t end something that’s been around for centuries. I just want us to realize that poverty isn’t limited to some poor, skeletal looking children in some African country on a Christian Children’s Fund ad. It’s there, every single day. Take some time, look, and more importantly, do something.

Poverty is a real problem in human societies everywhere. It’s a scourge man cannot remove. When I look at other worse off than me I have to give thanks for my blessings.

You are spot on about not seeing poverty as seeing something far away. Right before our eyes are many hungry persons struggling to make ends meet
