My thoughts on…Google Chrome

September 3rd 2008 -

googlechrome.jpgChances are you’re viewing my site using IE, Firefox, Opera or Safari. But now there’s a new browser on the block. I know. What’s new? But the big news is more on who created it than the browser itself. It was created by Google. Google Chrome is another part of Google’s effort to totally dominate the Internet. It’s been done in a clever way, ’cause if Google ever fulfils its goal and controls people’s browsing experience, they win the Internet! Micro$oft is probably wondering why they didn’t kill them when they had the chance. The company, not the owners. Then again… Well, to make my post more objective, I installed the browser. It was a rather fast process. When I started it up, I was pleased by the minimalistic interface. Only the essentials were there. When I typed in the search bar, it predicted my entry, even though I didn’t import my bookmarks from Firefox. It seems to me that it collects information from Google Search. Very nice.

Continuing, I decided to test its loading speed. I opened over a dozen tabs at once, then waited. They loaded much faster than I expected, faster than Firefox. I know, I know, I’ve committed blasphemy. But apparently I was right, because official tests have revealed that Chrome is 10-15 times faster than Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari. I actual felt guilty for liking a browser other than Firefox. How could I face it when I know I had cheated? I didn’t find any flaws with it, but I began to miss the complexities of Firefox. Plus I don’t fully trust it in terms of security. It has great potential, but Google’s products are perpetually in beta. That being said, Chrome proably won’t go too far too fast, and by time it’s out of beta, the other browser’s would’ve caught up.

Commenting from it now, google’s way of introducing to us through a comic book concept was ingenious google is so cool and hip; http://google.com/googlebooks/chrome. But you know what’s REALLY cool, when you try and uninstall it they ask you “Was it something we said” http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/7848/55334208ze6.png (dugg) i’m such a nerd:P

I was intrigued by it yesterday but not so much to install. Seems to me google already has issues with passing out your browsing info so why let them control my browser itself. hell no

“10-15 times faster than Firefox”, are you serious? Google really serious star! As you said, I too am skeptical about the security issues, but this is definitely one worth watching.

I am curious to see how the final Google product holds up to the competition. Not only are they making a browser but they are getting into cell phone service as well. Google may indeed control the world one day.

I had issues with it when I stalled it first a couple days ago. I got an error on opening the browser. Then that got resolved and I tried loading it from objectdock, no luck. I get an error on launching from the dock, not sure why. Anyway, as of now. I still prefer firefox and opera.

One thing I’ll mention - it has a lot of features that *really* can help the browser competition.

The ‘browser task manager’ is brilliant, and a much needed feature in browsers, plus the way it isolates tabs and processes.
They built the “V8″ javascript engine that appears to be a major step forward in terms of JS performance and stability, plus it’s open source so any browser can ‘plug it in’ and even create their own derivative works.
Since it actually reduces JS into bytecode, I am actually considering using it for other embedded systems such as 3D graphic simulations.

Since the whole project is open source, Firefox will benefit the most, and commercial close-source browsers (like IE) will have to reinvent the features or go OS themselves… so whether you use Chrome or not, it will have a very positive impact in the browser world.
