My thoughts on…Independence Day

Sorry for the scare the other day. The domain expired and it took a while to get it back up. Well, I guess this means that it’s been one year since I switched from Blogger to my own domain. Yay! Anyway, Jamaica celebrated its 46th Independence Day on the 6th. Why is this one so postworthy? Because the Independence celebrations this year were the biggest in recent memory, and the Float Parade and Grand Gala were brought back, two things that I quite frankly don’t remember, so it must’ve been cancelled for quite a while. If this was your idea Prime Minister Golding, way to go. The main celebration was at the National Stadium, which featured government officials, reggae artistes and performances by local bands.

There was also a stage show in Half-Way Tree, one which I hated, because that gathering of all those careless “buttu” people made getting through the square difficult, not to mention making my date claustrophobic and ruining the night. Damn, no one loves freeness like us Jamaicans. Yeah I’m a snob. Couldn’t you tell? Jamaica still has a long way to go. We still have to battle the ever-increasing problem of crime, not to mention our weak economy and all its symptoms, especially corruption, which has crippled virtually all of our public sector organizations. But if Jamaicans can unify like this on such a grand scale, well there might be hope for our country yet. Sadly most of these people don’t even appreciate the struggles their forefathers made to free Jamaica from British rule, and would like nothing better than to be given a ticket to some first world country, where, oddly enough, they behave better and work harder there than down here. Way to honour their sacrifice guys.
