My thoughts on…the Jamaican “bomber”
The news has been at the front of all the local media. Jamaican Kevin Brown (which is oddly the name of one of my former high school buds) is held at the Orlando airport with bomb making materials. It was also on the front pages of the American media as well, but that’s no longer the case. I guess this was when people found out that he was headed TO Jamaica, not from it. I’ve been to the forums of a certain site whose name sounds akin to an infamous curse word, and I’ve been assualted with weed jokes. Little suburbanite punks “surprised” that he didn’t carry bong making ingredients instead. I swear if any of them says “mon” one more time I’m gonna…anyway.
I don’t really care about the guy, but I don care about how Jamaica is perceived on the world stage. The whole Malvo thing was bad enough. In his defense, he claims that he was only carrying the items to show his friends how he made bombs in Iraq. Apparently the guy’s whacked out, suffering trauma from Iraq and the loss of his mother. Am I the only one who detects a cruel irony in the fact that a war started to prevent people from blowing us to high heaven (or so they say) is causing people to do the very same thing? Still, I’m more willing to give Kevin the benefit of the doubt than the sensationalist-driven media. Why? Because many people have been suspected for terrorism for a lot less. Case in point. An MIT student caused a bomb scare because…wait for it…she wore an device with LED lights attached to her shirt. Hooray for paranoia!

The irony is noted. But I also notice that no attention is being given to the how, why and aftermath of his mother’s death; its all about Iraq and how Jamaica is being perceived. Classic responses of Jamaicans to every problem that comes up — don’t look at yourself, just blame everybody else and avoid taking responsibility. The man was depressed and was not getting the kind of help or support he needed. And it seems that the only choice that men who are in crisis believe they have is to do violence to everyone around them. Iraq didn’t create that problem; we did.
I’m tired of the weed jokes too. Gosh. It’s not as if it’s legal. . .yet.

If he was heading to the US we wouldn’t hear the end of it! It seems to me though, that this guy has some mental issues considering the events in his life.

Leon, I agree with you about the spotlight it has put on Jamaica. This is sad because Jamaica is already viewed as one of the “murder capital’s” of the world. I agree with Stunner, if he was headed to the United States, he would already be under the jail. Everyone who is or will be requesting a visa will be in a for a long wait.

blame can be thrown all around about this, like dee said if he was heading there we wouldn’t here the end of it and the first thing that was continually highlighted by the next morning was “a jamaican man had a bomb at an airport” without any specifics thats all that was thrown around and as for those slow in the head people with the weed jokes*well u know my thoughts on that and it leans to a more violent reaction* he didn’t receive the help he needed even a member of his family knew about these issues and no one did anything sufficient as well as the united states government should take responsibility for their handiwork now and the others that are coming cause im sure a mad man is not going to go to a mental institution and say doc i think i have problems >:[
Maybe if some of the world leaders who give the go-ahead to start a war, had to get close to the action on the front lines, they would think twice about making such a decision.
I feel for Kevin Brown, and how he has now placed Jamaica in an unsavoury position/spotlight. He needs help; who is going to provide it? And how do we solve the problem that LongBench mentioned? We need solutions now, more than ever.

Very few people pay attention to mental health issues. As a result many do not get help until the worst happens. Bad publicity for Ja but hopefully he gets help

What i dont understand is why he felt the need to carry the items instead of just buying them in Ja. They said he had a pipe, threaded caps, bb’s and some unknown liquid. I dont really know about the liquid but if he’s making a pipe bomb wich they want to imply then it’s probably alcohol. The pipe and caps you can get at any hardware store, and while you wont find bb’s too easily, you can always buy marbles or ball bearings or use nails.
My other major problem is that he admitted that he wanted to show people how to make bombs. The items he carried were not illegal by themself, and cannot make a bomb by themself. He left out the 3 other things necessary (which we will not post here) to make a pipe bomb.
Had he said he just liked the way they look they couldn’t hold him for anything, even if they didn’t believe him. Stupid stupid man.
