My thoughts on…Windows 7
We all know that Vista was a failure of an OS. Now before you M$ fanboys gang up on me, consider this. Which operating system in the history of computing actually encouraged users to “downgrade?” Even Bill Gates himself admitted that Vista could’ve used a bit more polish. Vista could’ve been something great, but Microsoft rushed its release to meet its shipping date. Seems like the Longhorn project was a bit too ambitious for the folks at Redmond to handle. And yes, I can afford Vista. I just don’t want to. But the ultimate proof that Vista was a flop is the fact that Vista’s successor is already in the works. Seems like they’ve learned that people, though still very stupid, have gotten smart enough to realize that a turd wrapped in a fancy package is still a turd. Dubbed Windows 7, it is scheduled to be released as early as 2009. Here’s a short video of its interface. It’s a bit blurry, but clear enough.
Impressive no? I’d like to say that that’s an OS I’d actually buy, but if it has the same driver and hardware issues as Vista, then I’ll continue to roll with XP. But as complacent as Micro$oft is, they’re not stupid, and I’m 99.9% sure that they’ll fix all of Vista’s flaws. Worse with competition from open source software and online services like Google. This should be what Vista was originally meant to be. I’m looking forward to it, but don’t take my timeline as gospel, as Microsoft’s predictions cannot be trusted. So those who spent their hard earned money on Vista, all I have to say is “Ha Ha!” I almost feel sorry for you suckers though. You spent good money on an OS with the shortest product cycle since Windows ME. At least Vista succeeded in doing one thing. It helped Bill retire a little more comfortably.

I do agree with that, Microsoft spends too much time making new systems and annoying their customers. I’m still a fan of Windows 2000. It’s the best they’ve done.
irrespective of vista being a failure as soon as a operating system ships software development houses start planning for the next one immediately. So that mode of logic is a fallacy

I have to disagree with you on that one Taylor. Though it has a similar interface to Vista, it is Windows 7.
I had no idea they had a new windows computer in the make. I too hope it is better than the vista.

The main problem with Vista is that they tried to fix something which was already good. XP had a simple and intuitive interface, had a simple file structure, and was compatible with nearly everything. Vista on the other hand, introduced User Account Control (the most annoying thing in existence), a lot of useless functions, and now for some stupid reason every folder is sorted by Name, Date Taken, Tags, Size, and Rating. Not everything is a photo. In fact, most things on a computer aren’t.

I switched to Vista awhile ago and hated it so much that I had to switch back… SO glad I did.
I am also a Ubuntu user and think within 10 years M$ will have lots of problems with Linux and Macs stealing everything.
I am no M$ hater… I am using XP right now… I just think the money is not worth it and why fix something that is not broken?

How easily Leon is impressed by a few screen shots of an OS he has not yet even tried! I’d wait till you use it for a bit before giving it a review - just like the interface of Vista impressed the crap out of everyone till they actually came to use it, we don’t know anything yet about this one.
I still have a copy of ‘Neptune’ and it runs great.
And I still like my XP service pack 3 machine, and my Suse Linux.

I’d still go on with vista. Newer versions of windows requires more RAM than I can afford. Yes, I can’t afford a newer PC.

Second, none of this shocks me and while people pic on me for using a Mac, I will stay firmly planted with Apple. I have never gone through all the issues that I see with people upgrading their Windows OS. It has nothing to do with the machinery but the shoddy execution on the part of M$. I can’t understand how a company of this size can’t get their own stuff right and tell you to downgrade? That’s absurd!! Don’t release it if it don’t work no matter what deadline you put out. I guess it’s long live XP for the next couple of years.

Call me an Apple Fan Boy, but I will stick with OS X. It just works. I have spent the last few days helping people recover from spyware and viruses on Windows. I don’t mind not having that problme.
On the flip side, the office I manage is mainly Windows. The few machines we have moved to Vista are stable, but the people hate them. XP will remain our main operating system for the forseeable future. Vista just doesn’t have any real benefits for most people.

Leon. what is your rationality behind saying that is windows 7 in the wild… Did you know that you can easily change the content on the system information via registry hacks. I say thats Vista with some reg tweaking.
@Selene like i said earlier as soon as 1 operating system is released the development for the second one is kicked into high gear. The development for the future os may actually start production before the release of the current version in development.
Though its a radical example based on its development structure and nature take the gnu and linux kernel operating system ubuntu into perspective. Those guys have development cycles of about 6 - 7 months. As soon as one is finished they’re onto the next. MS does it similarly the difference is they ride out 1 os as long as possible with patches and updates to coverup the holes and rips in the fabric of the os until the market cry’s out for change… then and only then.. enter the new os.
I was fed up with the windows operating system from the days of xp and have been using a linux alternative for about 5 years now.

I’ve been using Vista daily for about the last year. In typical use, I’ve yet to find anything that warrants the criticisms I’ve read.
Is it different than XP and earlier versions of Windows? You betcha. Do you have to re-learn some things? Yep. Is it perfect? Nothing ever is. Is it horrible? Not in the least.
P.S. You can turn off the UAC and never see it again. As long as you use a reasonable level of care when installing new software (or when doing whatever else normally triggers it), there’s no reason to have it at all.

I haven’t bought Vista either. I heard too many bad things about it from others using it.
