speed_racer_logo.gifLong time readers of my blog will remember my post of the news of the Speed Racer movie. I then commented on how no one wanted to touch the movie until the Wachowskis took it under their wing. With such big names behind the project, the success of Transformers and the fact that Speed Racer was one of my favourite animes before I knew what anime was, I understandably excited. A little nervous, but excited. So when I heard about the release of the trailer, I just had to take a look. Here it is.

Interesting huh? I can’t quite describe it. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it. Sure it has a lot of starpower, with Elijah Wood as Speed, Susan Sarandon as Mom and John Goodman as Pops, but the racing, with its poor CGI and seizure-inducing colours just seems too cartoony. Yeah, I know. You’re expected me to say it fits because it came from an anime right? Well it doesn’t. It does seem to mesh with the live action. It almost seems as if its two movies in one. The Mach 5 looks badass, as it always did. Every kid I knew that watched the original Speed Racer anime wanted to get behind the wheel of that car. There doesn’t seem to be much of a storyline, but that can be forgiven, based on the source material. But an hour and a half is a lot longer than half hour, so they’d better flesh out what little story there is. But I’m not gonna bash it too much. Just because it didn’t meet my expectations of being like a Fast and the Furious for teens with a few Matrix effects thrown in, doesn’t mean its bad. To be fair, it would be pretty difficult to translate an anime to live action, while satisfying fans of the original anime and those looking for a good live action movie. Plus you can’t take this thing too seriously. After all, the original anime was deliciously campy. As I said before, I’ve got mixed thoughts about this. What do you think?
