Dog, I've been trying to leave you a comment for the last few posts, but no cigar. Anyway, I think Thanksgiving is a dumb holiday, but it's a day off from work. Thanks for celebrating it with us, buddy, but hell, I'd rather be where you are!

American Thanksgiving Day, a great day filled with gaudy and decadent gastronomical delights of delectable turkeys, hams, stuffings, egg nogs, sweet potatoes, inter alia, punctuated with excellent and spirited libations, football, and of course, camaraderie from/with family and friends.Notwithstanding the feats and jollification of the day,the anxieties within the society are profound, palpable, real and copious.Anxieties abound with respect to the sliding dollar and whether it will maintain itself as the reserve currency of the world or will it be dumped by OPEC,China, and Japan for the Euro. The constant increases in the cost of oil teetering around US$ 100.00 per barrel and the reverberating and multiplier effect and impact on all sectors of the American economy. The astronomical national debt, stratospheric trade deficits especially with China and Japan, outsourcing of jobs. The brutal and relentless marginalization of the middle class, the sub-prime mortgage problem with its excessive and copious foreclosures,de-gentrification and extenive ghettoization of neighbourhoods. The war in Afghanistan, war in Iraq, the economic growth of China and India in terms of their industrial revolution, the resurgence of Russia, possible war with Iran, the decline of Pax Americana, and the germs of a post hegemonic society becoming more imminent. All of the aforementioned issues have placed a damper, cloud and a pall on the American Thanksgiving, Although for many Americans, Thanksgiving is somewhat subjective and family oriented. But nonetheless, all Americans are still concerned about the orgy of consumerism called Black Friday, which in essence is the Friday after Thanksgiving, and is generally considered the busiest and at times most lucrative and profitable shopping day of the holiday season, and which is capable of giving the economy a shot in the arm in terms of correcting some of the economic malaise.Thanksgiving, like Christmas is about consumption, consumption, and more consumption and a sizeable portion of the population are not able to participate in this orgy as a consequence of the vagaries of the economy in an age of globalization.RESPECT!!
