startrektng20th.gifTwenty years ago, on September 28th, 1987 to be precise, Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered. Man I feel old! People were skeptical as to whether the new series would be a success, and indeed it was, drawing more audiences than the original Star Trek (and many network programs). Several years later, the show has become a big part of pop culture. Phrases like “Engage,” “Resistance is futile” and “Make it so!” were born from the franchise. I was a big fan of the series, which explains my love for technology, space exploration and all that crap. This show made me want to become an astronaut. But then I realized that Cape Canaveral wasn’t located in Jamaica. And that was one of my first broken dreams.

It also introduced me to Captain Jean Luc-Picard, possibly the only Frenchman besides Jean Reno that I actually rate. In fact, I’m pretty sure that watching Star Trek: TNG destined me for geekdom, causing me to accumulate great knowledge and expertise, but at great expense to my social life. Now everyone I meet instantly thinks I’m a either a punk or a virgin. (Not like there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just annoying.) Should I be celebrating this anyway? Anyway, happy 20th Next Generation. I still love you and I still watch you to this day, though you’re starting to look dated and not nearly as awesome when I was younger. Can’t wait the see the new Star Trek movie next year.
