My thoughts on…Saddam Hussein’s execution
At 6 am, Baghdad time, one of the most brutal tyrants of the century met his end. Saddam Hussein was hung for the killings of 148 people in Dujail, along with his half-brother Barzan al-Tikriti and Iraq’s former chief judge Awad Ahmed al-Bandar, the result of a year-long trial (far too long in my opinion). But of course you knew that, unless you’ve been avoiding the media for the last 20 hours. I knew they’d hang him within the week, because the Bush administration wouldn’t want him to see the new year.
Saddam was defiant to the end, smiling on his way to the gallows, refusing to wear a hood and finally shouting, “God is great! The nation will be victorious and Palestine is Arab.” I must say, I admire that about him. I believe that no matter how vicious the person, they possess at least one admirable trait. There was some contention as to whether or not his execution should be videotaped. Turns out it was taped. And you know it’s gonna end up on YouTube. An execution on YouTube? Meh, I’ve seen stranger on there.
It is rumoured that Saddam’s body will be buried in an unmarked grave. It is said that this may be done to prevent it from being a focus for Sunni Arab insurgency. But I think the true reason is far less noble. I think it is the final humiliation for Saddam, to bury him like a dog, the way many of his victims were. Hours after his execution, a series of bombing attacks hit Baghdad and near the holy Shiite city of Najaf. Big surprise. Which begs the question: “Will violence in Iraq cease or worsen because of Saddam’s death?” We’ll see, but the way things look, Bush and his cronies will have a lot more work on their hands.

Doh think his death will make a difference, one way or the other. The situation in Iraq is already out of control, and the US government continually is in denial. Now that Saddam is gone, what of Osama? Do they remember him?
Wish he could have spent the rest of his life in prison contemplating his crimes! Violence begets violence and I’m afraid that the situation in Iraq will get worse before it gets better.
Wishing you a very Happy New Year Leon!

I like your train of thought tisha the thing is. does it really make sense to keep them in prison using up valuable tax money for their preservation. food etc.. I’m not sayign death was the answer.. but i dont think prison is either.
At this point (after the deep set chaos) sadly I don’t think his death will have any effect except to encourage his suporters to rail up even more. Things have got so bad now that Saddam’s death is now lwargely irrelevant as it pertains to any peace in Iraq. Sad eh?
Chief Lymer
yup its pretty irelevant
The war will still be on and will never end. Bin Laden will need to be caught and I don’t see that happening anytime soon or at all for that matter.
OMIGOSH< i used the same line as Tish on my blog….violence begets violence, and Iraq sure could use a break.
The taunting at the execution is surely a PR nightmare. I must say saddam went out looking quite composed
The people doing the execution should have known better, of course it was going to be taped somehow. Now we have another mess…
Matt
