My thoughts on…the 2006 US mid-term results

November 10th 2006 -

The votes have been counted, and it comes to no surprise that the Democrats beat the Republicans in the mid-term elections, giving the majority in the Senate and the House of Representatives. To this I would like to add a resounding, “Duh!” I mean Americans are gluttons for punishment (have you heard what passes for music over there?), but they’d be crazy if they voted Republican after the many failings of the Bush administration. Some of you may be saying, “You’re Jamaican. What do you care?” Well, America’s the world’s most powerful nation and our neighbour to the north. Plus with all the coverage on cable TV, it’s kinda hard not to take sides.

I must admit, I was once a supporter of Curious George. The monkey seemed like a better alternative than the fish. (Get it? Flip-flopper.) His talk of capturing Bin Laden, ousting Saddam and bringing democracy to Iraq, preserving the morals of the country, making America a safer place, et cetera, et cetera, all sounded good. But his execution left much to be desired. Bin Laden is still at large, Iraq is in shambles, America has lost favour in the eyes of the world, and American sons and daughters are constantly being sacrificed to clean up the royal mess that King George made.

I’m not pro-Democrat, I’m just anti-Bush, and by the way America voted, I suppose they are too. They know what the Democrats stand against, but they don’t have much of a clue what they stand for, but they figure they couldn’t possibly make things worse than Bush has. The Dems couldn’t be happier. They’re pleased as punch, dancing around the head of Rumsfeld, happy that after all their efforts to impeach Bush (incompetence isn’t an impeachable offence guys), they’ve finally made a dent in the Evil Empire, which will strengthen their resolve to go after the giant white ball of death in 2008. But I guess they’re as excited as I am, ’cause of the Star Wars marathon tonight, hence the references. So when I see an X-wing take out a TIE fighter, I’ll think of a Republican losing a seat to a Democrat.

America has voted for more checks and balances.

I’ve never bought Bush’s story about spreading democracy etc etc. It’s not about failed execution - that was just a pretext and never the real intention.

However even worse the real intention to put an end to the volatility in a number of regions has also been an utter failure.

Good thoughts, dude. I have very similar observations over on my blog right now (about the Dems celebrating, etc.) … but meant to be taken in a more light-hearted manner.

Not surprising. The handling of the Iraq war was a sore point. Can’t wait to see the back of Bush

The music scene that gets attention here in the US awful. The good stuff is here but it’s not heard.

The Democrats can use this time to actually form a political message that is direct and to the point while they have the spotlight. You’re correct in that no one knows what they stand for. This frustrates me to no end and shows lack of leadership. But despite that, yes, people were sick of the direction the country was heading in.

I think many people outside of the US, like you, took an interest in this because you’re right, the US is a monster, a superpower. There’s enough military might here to seriously mess the world up and it’s discomforting to many. America is not meant to be a bully. This is what this country has become because our President is one. He has molded policy into his horrific image and now it’s time for a makeover.

Hey Leon! Nice analysis! I’m glad you are a Bush supporter, at least before the administration’s incompetence on Iraq. The Democrats have a great responsibility of governing from the center and not overstepping their power. Rumsfeld had to go, but that may not be enough for the radical left elements of the party. But they won’t have G.W. to kick around anymore. It’s time for performance. Besides, the GOP will be back like wildfires in 2008. Just you watch!

We weren’t relying on incompetence, we have actual Crimes!

As was said on CNN, the democrats didn’t win. The republicans lost. I hope Jamaicans will learn from this. When enough is enough, just do something about it!

Talking of STAR WARS, i finished my darth vader story , if you have time drop by and let me know what you think :)

  9. Say No to Crack Says:

Spot on! I think much of America shares your sentiment. “I didn’t know who to vote for, so I voted against Bush” was a very popular post-vote response.

  10. Jon Says:

I just think it is funny that so many people outside of the United States like to make comments like they have a stake in our success or failure. They need to worry more about their own leaders and stop worrying about ours.

Rumsfeld needed to go and I agree with Ricardo about the Democrats needing to spell out their plans and intentions for our country since they played on all of the libs discontent with the so called wrong direction.

I hope you are all happy with higher taxes and stagnent economy becuase that is exactly what will happen if they follow through on their threats to repeal all of the Bush Tax Cuts and raise the minimum wage by $2.00 or more.

    Blessings!!

Impeachment is a lame idea. Evidence? What evidence? That’s just Bush-hatred speaking. Radical lefties can’t stand the exercise of American power, plain and simple!
