My thoughts on…NBC’s Heroes

November 7th 2006 -

I’ve been meaning to publish this for a few weeks now. In fact, ever since the first episode, but I never got to see it, or the ones up until last night’s, which was the first episode I saw. But in my defense, I have been following up on the show through message boards, websites and of course, the online comic. At first I wrote it off as a 4400 ripoff, so I didn’t make much of an effort to see it. But after all the hype surrounding it, I checked it out, and it’s actually pretty good.

If you don’t know about the show, it’s about a bunch of average Joe’s that find out that they have superpowers, and now they must fufil their destiny by - what else? - saving the world. No spandex here, but I wouldn’t mind seeing that hot cheerleader in some. It’s the typical NBC drama. Engaging storyline, well-developed characters, good acting, and clearly a high production value, which is to be expected from such a big network. There’s a lot of interracial relationships in the show, probably to make up for Friends. (After that sitcom they should’ve changed their famous peacock’s colours to match Wonderbread’s.) And there are tons of product placements in the show.

“It’s time to play everybody’s favourite new game show, Find that Plug!” “Ok, Sarah, for 1 million dollars, name three things plugged on last night’s show.”
“Ok…um, the Razr, YouTube, and the Nissan Vespa?”

“Oh, sorry. It was the Razr, YouTube and the Nissan VERSA. Sorry Sarah. Too bad, and since you’re flat broke, they’ll probably repossess your house and put your disabled son in a foster home.”

“No! Please! I’ll do anything!”

“See you next time on Find that Plug!”

Hiro, the comic relief, seems to be the new Raymond, as everybody loves him, and why not? The guy’s into RPGs, comics, video games, Star Trek…the guy’s a nerd ok! Plus his charming naïvete makes him even more likeable. NBC seems to be making this a fan-powered show, with an online quiz, downloads, message boards, online comics, a blog, the works. See the official site for more. The villain du jour has not been revealed yet, but I wonder if it will be Nathan. There’s something about that guy I just don’t trust. Right now the heroes are in the self-discovery phase, trying to make sense of what is happening to them. And the cryptic message, “Save the cheerleader, save the world” has yet to be deciphered. With so many unanswered questions, you know I’ll be sticking around for more.

Saw it too, Was intrigued But it looks like on of those shows that if you miss an episode 3 episodes down the line you’ll be totally lost, which is good, if you are sure you gonna see most episodes, which isn’t gonna happen here

I still haven’t seen it yet, although I want to. There are just too many shows to watch. It’s hard to keep up.

You’ve got a lot of great posts as always. We have a lot of similar interests.

I saw the previews, and have watched a few. I know that I would like it if I allowed myself to become engrossed, but something keeps holding me back…

Maybe I will give it another go…

Heroes a 4400 wannabe? Naw, I started to watching at Episode 1 and I have not been disappointed since. Very engaging, who is Syla, What is Peter’s powers, Does Micah have powers too??? Lots of questions to be answered and you just can’t wait for next week. What I really like about how this show is done, is that it some how reminds be a bit of how the Matrix was done. There are clues within the show itself, and within the online novel, comics… no one calls it that anymore, grown up man! Adult don’t read comics, we read novels, just with lots of pictures, look at the colors.

Great show to get caught up in while waiting for Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis to start next year, can you believe they even cut in right in the middle of the season. A matter a fact I think it’s a conspiracy so that we watch the new shows.

    Save the cheerleader…Save the World.

I’ve been hearing about the 4400 comparison for a little while now, because of that I want to try and get 4400 my self and see what the hype is about.
To add to what igodit said above we read Graphic Novels….not comics hehehehe. The graphic novels even answers some question s we may not have been too sure about in the show itself. The heterogeneous of the show and grahic novel make “Heroes” a easy show IMHO to fall into. Especially if you a re a sci-fi person.

Heroes is nice… alot of suspense in it, it keeps u guessing on who is who; all now we really don’t know the REAL plot of the whole show.

“Save the Cheerleader…. Save the WORLD!”

NBC and other networks have been scrambled on my cable for months now, I only saw them showing since Tuesday this week so I’ve been missing out on all these very cool shows. Ah well, with a newborn now, I still may not be able to catch them so I’ll just rely on your commentary and wait for the DVD releases of the series!

And I Love Raymond, the 100% nerd of him!!

  8. igodit Says:

Why wait for the DVD, get the series from BT.

  9. Joanna Says:

I’ve just started watching this myself - and I’m glad I have. The nerd in me is pleasantly surprised :)
