I think there would be mass bloodshed whatever the outcome had been. Iraq is a complete and utter mess. By becoming tangled up in that nation’s affairs, we have weakened our ability to handle countries that have acquired or are intent on acquiring deadly weapons like North Korea and Iran.

We have not picked our battles wisely and whatever happens now - in the region and probably now globally too, it will be a “via dolorosa” for many.

You ask like Cicero, who benefits? In the long term nobody truly does - a lesson that George W. Bush is learning via the mid-term elections, even as we speak.
