My thoughts on…Speed Racer: The Movie, GO!

I’ve heard a rumour floating around, or rather read it, about the Wachowski Brothers’ latest project: a live action Speed Racer movie. Yes Speed, I’m just as surprised as you. It’s been pitched to Warner Brothers since 2004, and since then, no one has wanted to touch it with a 10 foot pole. Understandable, as this will be a difficult movie to translate to film. Leave it to the masterminds behind the Matrix to take up the challenge. I wonder if they’ll do it justice though. I hope they do, as Speed Racer was my favourite anime before I knew what anime was, and I’m not alone. Speed Racer has a strong following to this very day, so a lot of people will be mighty pissed if they mess this up. And knowing the Wachowski’s, they’ll add tons of skin, explosions and slo-mo scenes to the movie to make it more “realistic” and “action-packed.”

But Speed Racer’s appeal wasn’t about the action. Sure, the action made it interesting, but there are a lot of action-packed shows out there that haven’t lasted as long. The main draw of Speed Racer was the sheer campiness of it all. Lip-syncing so poor that even Ashley Simpson would agree, the fast dialogue (though I guess it’s appropriate), Speed being startled by just about everything, etc. And get this, Vince Vaughn wants to play “Racer X”. I don’t see it, but I guess if they can change Keanu Reeves from an airhead to an all-powerful saviour, I guess they can do the same for Vince. I hope the Wachowskis work their magic and make Speed Racer a winner at the box office, or they’ll live out the rest of their lives, dwelling on the glory days of The Matrix.

   yeah, it’d have to be the Wachowski brothers to recreate Speed Racer and do it right. but seriously, another Car Racing movie?! and in PG. I don’t think I’ll bring my kids to watch it. I don’t want them growing up thinking that Car Racing is cool. I want my children to think if Alternative Planet Saving modes of transportation. Non pollutive vehicles, etc.. Okay, I sound like a hippy New Ager or something but serioulsy, Global Warming is caused by automobile pollutants and the Speed Racer movie perpetuates such a mentality.

   Matrix definitely among de more creative movies, so any other movie employin’ that creativity can’t B all bad.

   Oooooh, I remember watching Speed Racer as a child and HATING it!!!! LOL How odd than they want to make a live action movie out of it.

   And yes, I AM a big time gamer!!!!!

   I think that they have to accept what they have and try and make as fun a movie as they can - don’t try changing it - embrace the fact that you are making a saturday morning cartoon into a movie!!

   I have to admit that I have not heard of this but shall be googling it to find out more. However, remakes of perfectly good films are nearly always ruined when made for an American audience.

   Come on, as long as it has cheesy music it’ll be great! This will likely join Dukes of Hazard as one of my all time favorite movies!

    these damn movie makers keep messing up classic old shit.. now let me tell you whats gonna happen, they gonna take an okay anime(not great just okay) turn it into a diahhrea of a movie and then i’m gonna flame it with all the webpresense i have in my power and make sure it gets alot of negative feed back because i’m a grouchy old otaku (anime lover) and they ruining something that could just be left alone.

    Some things should be left alone. Are they so desperate now that they are going to touch Speed Racer? I thought the Flintstones was bad enuff.What is next, Bugs Bunny?

    Why can’t they come up with something original? Geez, first “Scooby Doo” and now this? I’m so tired of old cartoons and movies being made over and over. There has to be a fresh idea out there!

    I thought it was the numerous porno spoofs that could made from the title of “Speed Racer” that gave it it’s charm
