My thoughts on…Google: The world’s most powerful company?
Just this morning, I got to thinking about just how powerful Google is, and how it may well be the world’s most powerful company. Sure, if any tech company is going to take over the world, surely it will be Microsoft, assimilating us all with a giant Windows cube commanded by Billgatus of Borg (Non-Trekkies click here), right? But think about it. Microsoft mainly controls desktops, which is a powerful thing to command, but Google controls so much more.
They have Google Earth, which offers satellite maps of just about every corner of the planet. Who says they can’t use it to watch over us? Who says Google can’t be Big Brother? They of course have their search and video services, which they can use to influence public opinion by altering search results and showing choice videos. What’s to stop them from using that influence to achieve a political agenda? They’ve got Google Desktop, which, for all we know, could be secretly monitoring your computer activity. You see where I’m going with this?
Perhaps I’m being too paranoid, but I tried searching Google, trying to find out where exactly they store their search data, but nothing useful came up. Maybe I didn’t search well enough, or maybe it’s simply top secret. Maybe its located somewhere in the US, or maybe offshore, like a secret volcano lair? Plus I don’t trust large companies. They tend to have far too much control over our lives, and regardless of how Google started out, and no matter how much it tries to retain its friendly image, the fact is that now it is a souless corporate giant, and like all the others, it will try its best to be master of all that it surveys, and won’t hesitate to use us as pawns to do it.
