My thoughts on…the girls who cried McDonalds
October 13th 2006 -
Here we go again. Another frivolous lawsuit involving McDonalds. Two fat teenage girls sued McDonalds for “tricking them into eating food that made them fat and sick.” And no, the picture at the right is not one of them. And the only thing worse than this claim is the fact that they won. I’m surprised by this, even more than the legendary “hot coffee” lawsuit. Not the one involving Ronald McDonald, Paris Hilton, the Hamburgler, a Sony Handycam and a moonlight night. The one involving hot coffee being spilled in a lady’s lap, which in my opinion, was the most ridiculous reason for a lawsuit. Until now that is. Something like this should only fly if Ronald McDonald held them down and stuffed Big Macs down their throats.
The girls claimed that McDonald’s ads were deceptive, and that the foods caused “obesity, hypertension and elevated levels of LDL cholesterol”, and the judge ruled in their favour. I still can’t believe this. Maybe this ruling would have made sense a couple years ago, when people were still in the dark about McDonalds’ foods. But after all Morgan Spurlock (of “Supersize Me” fame) put this body through, people should have no excuse when it comes to the consequences of eating fast food.
And what about personal responsibility? Today’s fast food consumer is more informed than it was years ago. There are many alternatives to greasy, fatty foods, such as Subway sandwiches. There are tons of ads about cutting calories and losing weight. McDonald’s itself has tried to create a more healthy image, with Ronald McDonald sporting a new form-fitting jumpsuit and participating in various physical activities, and including milk, applesauce, and other healthy foods in their menu. And now these brats want to shove grease down their gullets and whine that big, bad Mickey D’s made them do it? Hmph. If this foolishness continues much longer, McDonald’s may just have to put a disclaimer on their wrappers, “Warning. This food is hazardous to your health. Eat at your own risk.” Now please excuse me. I’m going to sue Google for my blogging addiction, which has robbed me of many hours of my social life. Oh, and happy Friday the 13th! Muhuhahaha!

Hmmm, but it did make them fat… & it did make them sick. McDod’s gotta start showin’ some obese people in some o’ their ads, then teens will know de real deal immediately.

That is one NASTY picture. Maybe the judge will make McDonalds post that as a warning label. Kind of like the cigarette warning labels in Canada that show cancerous mouths (yechh).
Speaking of Paris Hilton … her and Nicole richie should spend more time in McDonalds, that or become spokesmodels for undernourished Africans.

Hmmm, I could think of a few people I could sue. Lemme see, there’s a few clothes stores in the States, and shoes stores - I can’t stop buying from them, making me poor, Ok, I’m trying to decide who to sue for my internet addiction, can’t be google, oh I know, maybe I could sue blogger, yeah that darn blogger cause me to reduce some study hours. Who else, oh I know, Digicel and Television Jamaica for sponsoring Rising Stars, they cost me some study hours as well. Um, who else, tell ya what, lemme go make a list, quite a few organizations coming to mind, let me go draft my resignation as well, after suing all these I won’t need to work anymore….

That’s the American legal system for you. It is so ridiculous; although I do wish our legal system offered us at least a little hope.

I guess some ppl will do anything for money…plus they’ll never own up to their own actions…I wonder if that had anything to do with the ban on trans fat or something of that sort????

Leon I’m very shaken by the image you chose here but I must agree, the lawsuit holds no water as they are not being forced to eat any of it.

That’s sad. These folks know exactly what they are getting when they go to these restaurants. I can’t believe they won this lawsuit. Ridiculous!

I guess that’s the problem with law - any laws that you have are open to more extreme and unintended outcomes. And when lawyers are trained to look for clever arguments and loopholes, this kind of thing is inevitable.

I realize that poplular press of stories like these make people shake their heads in wonder(and sell for the media)…trouble is, the stories are usually a bit thin on what the facts of the case are all about. In this case, the suit wasn’t about the girls being fat, it was about McDonald’s not providing labeling for their food content. In other words, hiding information so that people can make informed decisions and take responsibility for themselves. Now…I realize that most people with an IQ over 50 understand that fast food is about as good for you as eating out of a dumpster; still, McDonalds gets no pass to violate food labeling laws just because they are a big company and have millions of customers who feed off their slop every day.

you should look up the case law on the coffee case … surprisingly enough, it was NOT a frivolous lawsuit and was grossly over-simplified in the media to make it sound like a frivolous lawsuit.
