My thoughts on…the 2006 Rising Stars finale
October 9th 2006 -
Just about every Jamaican had their eyes glued on TVJ last week Friday at 8, to see who would win Digicel’s Rising Stars competition for 2006. Even if thy didn’t like the show, they had to watch it because it would be the talk at the watercooler the next day, and they wouldn’t want to be left out of the loop. It came down to aspiring boy band (strike that), singing group One Third and songstress Nickesha Barnes. Whoever won would make Rising Stars history, as no female or group had won the competition.
I was rooting for One Third, and so were most people. So when it was announced that they won, most weren’t surprised. I only know of one person who attended the stage show at Mas Camp, as most people just wanted to know the results. Not like they could go if they wanted, as the tickets were all sold out. I think Nickesha made it this far because she was Anthony Miller’s wild card. Not to take away from her talent, but I think that people thought if Jamaica’s own Simon Cowell liked her, then she must be good.
I also believe that One Third won because a lot of women voted for them, women enamoured with the group because of the love songs they would frequently belt out. The same women who flood men’s inboxes with “Please Call Me”s. One of my church sisters was saying yesterday that her votes made One Third win. Likely story. As for Nickesha, she handled defeat quite maturely. Then again, it wasn’t really a defeat, as she won $600,000 for her efforts. If she rides the wave Rising Stars has given her, she should do well. A lot is expected of One Third, and if they continue the performance they displayed on Rising Stars, they shouldn’t disappoint. Good luck to both of them.

Another successful rising star competition, and lots of money in Digicel’s pocket! You’re right, one third had the young girls in their pockets!

I was rooting for “the aspiring boy band” 1/3 as well. The boys have talent. What they need now is some good original material and they are good to go. I question the stepping stone of rising stars as so far, none of the winners or almost winners have gotten the “big buss” we were expecting. Let’s see if a Shocking Vibes contract will make a difference.

Buffulous from Yardflex suggested that One Third really came third, monetarily anyway, because both Nikeisha and the person who came third will take home more dollars than any individual member of One Third. Give her a check, she is quite amusing. The site is down right now or I would give you the exact link…
