My thoughts on…the Amish killings
October 5th 2006 -
You know how pissed off this headline made me? Five Amish schoolgirls, the oldest of them 13, were killed by a psychologically and emotionally unstable man, Charles Carl Roberts IV, who then killed himself. I don’t really care about him killing himself. He deserved it for what he did. And his reason for doing such a horrible thing? He said in his suicide notes that he molested two of his relatives 20 years ago, and dreamt of doing it again.
He also said he was “filled with so much hate” and “unimaginable emptiness.” He especially felt hatred towards God concerning the premature death of his prematurely born daughter. You felt guilty about molesting, so you chose to kill? I don’t follow your line of reasoning sir. Plus it happened 20 years ago, so at the time you were 12, a kid yourself. I know you wouldn’t have gotten more than a slap on the wrist. So you killed these girls for no reason at all really.
He carried lubricating jelly with him, suggesting that he was planning to molest them. What angers me most about this is that he killed Amish girls. The Amish are the closest thing we have to innocents in this world, and the kill Amish children is killing the innocent of the innocent. I don’t empathize with him because of this disturbed mind. What he did was evil. Pure and simple.
As usual, people never saw it coming. They never do do they? It’s always the quiet people. Why the Amish? Why attack such peaceful people? Maybe it was the proximity, or maybe they were just lambs for the slaughter in his sick view. How are the Amish people reacting to this? Surprisingly well actually. They are reaching out to the killer’s family, and are content, believing that it was “God’s will,” though they are more cautious now, being touched by fear. Bless the Amish people. Such calmness in the face of adversity.

Did you read that the two relatives of the killer said he never molested them like he had claimed? Who knows what really happened, but that man was insane. He will rot in hell.

The media has once again descended like hungry sharks on these very private people. What happened is tragic but we should really leave them alone to come to terms with what has happened.

It is so frustrating when these things happen, and you never know why!
He killed himself and took away all hope of some semblance of justice for those familes (wether legal or vigilante), and they will never have closure. Somehow how I think that his actions were random and contrived, and a copy cat from the school shootings the week before.

He targeted the Amish because he knew they would never be armed and he wouldn’t have to confront someone with a weapon.
No one will ever know why but the innocent of the innocent is a closest we will ge for answer. He stole something precious from the Amish.

I don’t know what it is about today’s society that seems to breeding more and more of these sick minds!
And, even if he was molested as a child (which seems also to be a fashionable explanation that many of these warped individuals come up with) somehow there comes a time in one’s life where you become responsible for your actions, regardless of what happened to you when you was a pickney! Put the rahtid past behind you and move on. Sick!

It is so sad. There are some disturbed people on this earth who really need help. It’s unfortunate that he didn’t seek that help and instead turn to this massacre. He will pay for his sins and that is the only consolation that the Amish family have as do us all. If someone was sexually molested, why would you want to put another person through that? Why is that always sited as the reason for this sick display of unorthodox behaviour of molestors? It makes me absolutely sick.

I’ve lived in close proximity of the Amish all my life and they are not as innocent as you think. A lot are rebelling against the lifestyle.
This comment has nothing to do with that trajedy though.

The outside world is crouching in and who knows how long it will be before these innocents do not remain innocents anymore.
I have been keeping up with this story and I read the other day that the girls didnt even ask to live.
It is very sad.
He cant blame all the little girls about his problem and evil thoughts on molestation. And again, he’s picked these girls out for a reason.

Its disgusting that such a horrific incident was to occur with the most peaceful human beings on earth today. The amish are Virtue personified. I guess the troubling times that we live in has not spared to touch even this community. Really sad.

A horrible crime indeed by a tragic, sick individual.
Excellent, thoughtful post, Leon — probably the best one I’ve seen on this topic. Your compassion shows in your writing. Keep up the good work.

Thoughtful post. I think it’s amazing that so many members of the Amish community went to his funeral and extended the hand of forgiveness. These are sad times.
