My thoughts on…Survivor: Cook Islands
Survivor, the mother of all reality shows. Lies I tell you, lies! That title belongs to the Real World! Poor show never quite got its props. Anyway, it was the one that started the whole reality show craze, causing networks to churn out these ridiculous shows because they knew you had nothing better to do with your life than watch. Well now after six years and a declining viewership, they’re trying to revive the old bag with Survivor: Cook Islands, or Survivor: Race Wars as its more commonly known, as the cast has been segregated. It’s been on for about three weeks now.
I’ve been trying to watch the show, but it clashes with the news. But then again I probably won’t need to, as its the same Survivor but with a new gimmick. I’ve seen the original Survivor, and I’ll tell you, I was underwhelmed. “This is what all the fuss is about?”, I said to myself. If I wanted to see white people on an island competing with each other, I’d go to the North Coast or something. Plus I could be enjoying the white sand beaches up there instead of being slumped in front of my television set.
This was obviously an attempt to create controversy in order to gain viewership, hoping that people would rally around their respective races or that some racial slurs would be thrown across camps. This seems to have failed, because after just three weeks, the camps have been split according to gender. Or maybe it was because of all that bad press. CBS, shame on you for trying to grab ratings for your once hit show by trying to ressurect one of history’s greatest sins! I guess people will have to amuse themselves with this until American Idol returns.
