My thoughts on..Jamaica’s loss to England
Saturday, Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz faced England in a football match. Jamaicans eagerly looked forward to the match, calling it the most important match in Jamaican history, apparently forgetting the four matches we played in the last World Cup. I for one was not looking forward to the match. Reason being? Well, before the match with England, we played against Ghana and lost 4-1! Ghana, a first time World Cup qualifier, beat us! And by such a large margin too! In defense of the Reggae Boyz though, most of their star players have gone to play for European teams, leaving a hollow shell of a team. turns out there is a price on patriotism. But what doesn’t have a price nowadays? And they were supposed to go up against England, a team so great that it is one of the favourites to win the World Cup?
In fact, England is so sure of themselves that they are already making preparations for their win, and the World Cup hasn’t even started yet! It’s that same arrogance that caused the downfall of England’s old imperialism, and made room for America’s new imperialism - capitalism. But this isn’t the place for historical diatribes. “This is going to end badly”, I said to myself. And it did. England crushed us 6-0. Ouch! With that stinging defeat fresh in the minds of Jamaicans, we’ve now turned our attention to cricket. We’re winning at cricket and losing at football. How the tables have turned!
P.S. No doubt by now you’ve realized the new design of my blog. Thanks to Va Va Voom for the design.
