My thoughts on…6-6-06

June 6th 2006 -

It’s here, the day you’ve been dreading since you first saw those “Omen” commercials. The 6th of the 6th ‘06, and people everywhere are freaking out. Evangelicals are preparing for the rapture, when God’s chosen will be taken to Heaven. Doomsday scenarios are on everyone’s lips. Mothers are trying desperately to prevent their babies from being born today. And of course, The Omen opens today. But what’s so special about this day? Well, for those who’ve never been in contact with a Bible before, today’s date matches the Devil’s calling card, 666.

Now, I’m not a superstitious person. I won’t spend the day sitting in a circle made of holy water, trembling while clutching a cross. I don’t expect the world to end today. Despite the existence of Scientology and Paris Hilton, the world hasn’t completely gone to hell. People expected the world to end in 2000, and were still here aren’t we? The only significant thing that will happen today is the opening of The Omen. Opening a film about the AntiChrist on 6-6-06 was an excellent gimmick, but it may have the reverse effect. People might shy away from theatres, and people may label the movie as satanic, given the opening date. Anyway, happy 6-6-06 everyone!
