Basic Instinct 2, the sequel to the infamous Basic Instinct, was released on March 31st, and grossed a measly $3.2 million. The movie was a flop, registering a blip on the Hollywood radar for a split second and disappearing just as quickly. I guess it wasn’t too bad, because it was a flop, not a bomb. And no, they are not the same. A flop is when a movie does poorly at the box office. A bomb is when a movie does poorly at the box office and it sucks, and I doubt that an actress of Sharon’s calibre would produce a bomb. Not impossible, but highly improbable.

I believe that one the reasons for the movie’s failure was the lack of hype surrounding the movie. There were no ads, no celebrity interviews, no behind the scenes, nothing (not to my knowledge anyway). The director, in his infinite arrogance, must’ve thought that the movie’s pedigree and the name Sharon Stone would be enough to carry it off. So he decided to sit back and let the dollars roll in. Big mistake.

I also believe that the main reason for the movie’s failure was Sharon herself. Not like there’s anything wrong with her, but she’s just not the sex symbol she used to be, and to be frank, no one’s interested in seeing her privates anymore. That’s the scene that Basic Instinct was famous for. No one remembers the plot or the character names. All they remember is that scene. Maybe it would’ve been a success if Jessica Alba played the part? Or Kiera Knightley? Or Angelina Jolie? Or … you know what, let me just stop.
