I have been contemplating this issue for quite some time, and I have yet to come up with an answer. So I hope that the collective knowledge of the blogosphere will help me out. What’s with chicks and sci-fi? Why don’t they get it? About 2 weeks ago, I was talking to an old friend of mine when I came out of the closet and declared that I was a Trekkie. She looked at me in amazement, as if I was a Klingon or something, then said “You are such a child.” The next day, I was in class talking with a few female classmates about what they do in their spare time. I was questioned. I then told them my various activities. Everything was going well until “watching Star Trek” came up. They gave me the same look of amazement as my friend, then one said “You need a life.” And there are countless other times in which my female companions were either mystified by my love for sci-fi or confused by sci-fi itself.

Guys on the other hand, have no problem with my love for sci-fi. In fact, many of them share it. I remember talking with my pals for many minutes about sci-fi, especially Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings and The Matrix. And even those who aren’t into it will acknowledge the fact that Darth Vader is the boss. Mind you, there are a few “anomalies” out there, a few girls that are into sci-fi. You know the ones. The one or two girls that you’ll see at sci-fi conventions. You know that they’re true fans because it’s not like they’re there for the guys. There may be a vast selection of them, but choosing from a bunch of guys for whom the closest they’ve ever come to having an intimate relationship with a girl was fantasizing about Princess Leia isn’t much of a choice.

And I can’t believe that to this very day, there are some girls out there that DON’T UNDERSTAND THE MATRIX! What’s so hard to understand? I don’t know. Can only guys feel the excitement of a lightsaber duel, the weight on Picard’s shoulders when he’s about to make a grave decision, the awe of the Matrix’s complexity, or the unshakeable hope of the Fellowship? It’s probably just as well, because us guys can’t understand women’s fascination with that farce of a movie genre, “romantic comedies.” Oh, and I recently reached my 10,000th page visit! Woohoo!
