My thoughts on…Brokeback Mountain’s arrival in Jamaica
Yes folks, Brokeback Mountain has finally made its way to Jamaica. I saw it on the Palace Cineplex billboard while heading to school yesterday morning. I said to myself “So those gay cowboys have made their way to Jamaica. Surprising that the Jamaican public didn’t have anything to say about it.” But the Jamaican people did have something to say, as I found out on the way home from school. The Star, Jamaica’s most popular tabloid, carried the headline “No to gay movie.” Not surprising, as homosexuality is taboo in Jamaica. In fact, it’s downright illegal.
Now before you gay advocates out there start posting hateful comments, understand that Jamaica is a very conservative country. Our laws are based on those of the Holy Bible, and the Bible says that homosexuality is immoral. That’s our belief. That’s our culture. DEAL WITH IT! Personally, I’m tired of hearing about Brokeback Mountain, the awards, the jokes and the parodies. Oh Brokeback Mountain, I wish the media knew how to quit you!

It’s funny how some people want us to be tolerant of their beliefs and decisions but they won’t be tolerant of ours. Personally I think Brokeback Mountain is way over rated and people wouldn’t be loving it if it was a cowboy and cowgirl.
Yea, we posted the same thing! LOL! Great minds think alike. Or maybe the movie is that controversial. I never knew that the star had an article about it until I read about it in your post just now. But today I got to thinking, when we all make our comments on the movie (media and personal views included), are we inadvertently “advertising” it the film by discussing its controversial nature and thus adding to the enigma of it? End result being more people wanting to see it, just to see what the hype is really all about. But then again….is the controversy of the movie intensified by the fact that the movie ‘comes out’ (< – no pun intended, LOL) during discord about the ammendment of the Charter of Rights Bill to include homosexual marriage? Just a question. In any event, just as though they banned Blade, maybe they should have banned this one, based on our culture. Now, I’m beginning to feel that since they didnt do that, that means that there is now somewhat of a relaxation of our country’s general moral principle towards homosexuals, which may or may not be good. Wonder how the Bill thing will turn out. (Sorry for the long comment…I need to stop doing this. lol.
the movie doesn’t interest me.
i’m tired of hearing about it, too.
the thing with homosexuality is that they are all people. thank you
I’ll watch it if it comes here. Its probably very ordinary but gay cowboys upset a lot of stereotypes. So that may be part the reason for the buzz
Its not a movie I would actually go to but during my teenage years in Jamaica we were told not to view JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. I never went to see it not because I was told not to but how many teens are actually interested in musicals. Your blog is interesting
but Jamaica has to realise gays are people too. While I don’t expect them to accept gay marriages or that it is right. Jamaica needs a more moderate approach. Bing gay does not mean you hate/kill a person. It is my understanding that it is something you are born with like a handicap.
Aruba is fairly conservative too. In fact, ‘Brokeback Montain’ hasn’t even made it here yet, and I doubt that it will.
However, I do believe that the people get the right to make the choice for themselves. If they are not interested in the movie because of their beliefs, the theaters will get the hint and take the movie away.
I was shocked to see it released here in Jamaica! I couldn’t believe that Palace Amusement would do such a thing. It just goes to show that these homosexuals have been desensitizing the, homophobic Jamaican society. First it was the introduction of the nastiness in the sitcoms, then MTV, now a cinema movie.
Tanya, that whole “gay gene” thing has not been scientifically proven. There is one that might PREDISPOSE you to become gay, but it has very little effect. NO ONE is born gay.
I have to disagree with you Leon. People are born gay just as people are born straight or bisexual. Don’t discriminate against people that are different to you. It ain’t nice
Oh! I’m bisexual. In case you’re interested.
I’m not discriminating catt. But from what I can gather, there isn’t sufficient scientific evidence to substantiate that claim.
Ok, but there’s also not enough evidence to say that it’s not genetic either. I bet if you asked a lot of gay people they would say that they were born that way. There has defintely been nothing in my life that has ‘made’ me be the way I am in regards to my preferences.
Could you all please stop yacking and go see the movie. THEN might you be able to forge a
proper opinion. Let me think… does the bible allow that?
Let all people, gay or straight, love and be happy.
The world is too cruel as it is.
Brokeback Mountain will show you that if you resist to the love of your life, it will destroy your life.
It’s a perfectly made, beautiful and sad love story.
We sure need more of those, don’t we?
Leon said that People are not born GAY. It’s a choice. Well in that case, WHY WOULD any want to be treated like crap? WHY if it’s a CHOICE, why won’t you choice to be GAY??? People are born gay. It has been show. Leon, live a little longer. Walk in another person shoes, before you judge them. I always look at people, and think “WHAT IF THAT WAS ME? How would I feel.” Sorry, I guess I just care.
I’m sick and tired of people turning my Brokeback post into a way to bash me! First of all, I don’t support homosexuality. The Bible says it’s immoral. That is my view. Stop trying to force your beliefs on me! But it doesn’t mean that I hate them! Yes, yes, I know they’re people too. Who said I didn’t?
To Tracy, Tanya, Catt and all the others that think people are born gay, think about this. There is proof that there is a gene for aggression that may predetermine criminal behaviour. But should a serial killer or a sex offender be set free if they are found with said gene? No! See, your line of thinking is flawed, and such thinking is created in an effort to eliminate moral responsibility. Genes only have the power to influence behaviour, not totally determine it. Did you see the actual news report on the study like I did, or are you going off hearsay?
And Tracy, people choose what they choose because they believe strongly in it, not because of how others may treat them. That’s a very weak argument you presented. John, don’t patronize my beliefs. You obviously didn’t have the guts to back up your argument because you left no link. Now people, please give this a rest.
Food for thought: Why is everyone so fired up about this brokeback mountain movie? It really hasn’t done all that well in the theaters anyways. The numbers I’ve seen say its only made about 1.5 million. (My numbers could be wrong and I freely admit that) And most people I’ve talked to say have not and will not see it.
This is a clear cut case of the liberal agenda trying to force their opinion on us. And I for one am sick of it. Homosexuality goes against nature and God. You ever see two bucks doin it in the woods? And Leviticus 18:22 says Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. I mean really, how much more proof do you need?
One more thing. The Passion of the Christ made over 400 million and wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar. HMMMMMMM. makes you think don’t it?
This is an update to my above post. I rechecked my figures and found that BBM made 76 million pre oscar. According to the powers that be, a movie needs to make at least 100 million to be considered a blockbuster. So my question is why was BBM even nominated? And for that matter, why was any of the movies? CRASH, CAPOTE.. etc None of these movies made over 100 million but the Cronicles of Narnia made 300 million and was not nominated for best picture. Man I’m sick of Hollywood.
I don’t support Bible. In fact I think it’s just bullshit. I hope you can tolerate my point of view
One thing I like on the Bible is that it promotes all kinds of hate. In fact I can argue in favor of slavery and racism quoting the Bible
But then I again, I prefer to use my on head to think, and not just “follow what the book says”, like those who made 9/11 etc. That’s why I’m not racist.
And when I have an opinion on a book ou movie it’s because I’ve read it or seen it, not because I read the Bible.. If you want to talk about Brokeback Mountain you should watch it first. You can read the book here: http://brokeback-mountain.blogspot.com/
[...] know about him until that movie. You know the one. Bareback…I mean Brokeback Mountain. We Jamaicans never took to that movie, for obvious reasons. I remember one time when I was in a study group when a member of the group [...]
