My thoughts on…Internet Explorer 7 beta
February 3rd 2006 -
I’m a huge Firefox fan. In fact I’m using it right now. So when I heard about the release of the beta version of IE7, I pretty much shrugged it off. “More mediocrity” I said to myself. But as I saw the numerous reviews on it, I thought it may be worth a second glance, and I must say, the upgrade seems pretty good. IE7 comes with new features copied from similar to rival browsers, such as tabbed browsing, an RSS reader and a built-in searchbar. It also features a smoother, more modern look, a larger viewing area, and an impressive loading time, which I’m hearing is faster than Firefox. The IE logo has also been given an upgrade. It now has a yellow ring around the E. Interested? You can get it here.
I remember the first time I used Mozilla Firefox. Being a techie, I knew about the original Mozilla browser, but since I didn’t own a computer, I never got to try it. Then one day while using a cybercafe’s computer, I saw the Mozilla Firefox icon. I decided to give it a click. What happened afterward was pure magic. I had no idea pages could load so fast! I fell in love with the Internet again, and for the first time in years web surfing was a stress-free experience. I’ve been a loyal Firefox follower since then.
IE7 is a long needed upgrade. The new features bring it into the 21st century, and might make it an actual threat to Firefox, but they will more than likely bring IE to Firefox’s level. But I’m still not gonna go back to IE. Got too much love fo’ tha’ Fox. Plus Microsoft’s dominant position in the software market has made them complacent, so their products tend to be unimpressive.

Hey Leon,
Do you have any idea of whether or not IE 7 is more standards compliant than its predecessors?
To me, one of the great pains of blogging is trying to get my sites to look good across all platforms and browsers.
I’ve pretty much given up on IE, and now I just do my designing for Firefox and the other compliant browsers, but it sure would be a nice surprise to find that Microsoft was playing fair…
A boy can dream, right?!

People say that IE7 doesn’t have the CSS and .PNG problems that IE6 had, so maybe. But there will always be cross platforming problems.

Hi Leon,
most of my female friends can knit to some level. I have more experience at embroidery though and that is rare to find amongst my age group.
