My thoughts on…Jon Stewart hosting the Oscars
Jon Stewart of the popular satirical news show “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”, has been chosen to host this year’s Academy Awards on March 5th. Jon was thrilled by the news, saying he was honoured. Many other potential hosts were considered, such as Conan O’ Brien, Jay Leno and Steve Martin, but at the end of the day, Jon made the cut. After the controversial performance by last year’s host Chris Rock, which offended many, especially Jude Law, the Academy seems to have found a more professional host in Jon, with the same level of humour. Anyone who knows Chris Rock’s brand of humour knew that he combined with the Oscars was a disaster waiting to happen, and I made sure to watch the spectacle myself. I could feel the members of the Academy cringe during Chris’ performance, and I must admit, I got a bit of twisted pleasure from it. After that, I simply switched the channel, because I really didn’t care which movies got nominated, because I didn’t watch the majority of them. Plus the ceremony is too boring anyway. Rock says he won’t be coming back, but trust me, no one will miss him. However, Jon isn’t afraid to offend either, his insults are just as stinging, just more refined. He’s an accomplished comedian, and his show has won seven Emmys. And with nominees like “Brokeback Mountain,” “Munich” and “The Constant Gardener”, he shouldn’t have much trouble finding material. Personally, I’m glad he was chosen, because one of my favourite comics. I’ll be sure to tune in. I’ll probably be the only straight guy watching though, due to Rock’s comment last year. Good luck Jon.
