My thoughts on…Lou Rawls’ death

January 7th 2006 -

Grammy winning singer Lou Rawls died yesterday of lung cancer in Los Angeles. He was 72. He was known for hits such as “Lady Love”, “You’ll never find another love like mine” and “Tobacco Road.” He found his voice where most African-Americans do - in the church choir. His smooth, masculine voice allowed him to cross genres, such as pop, gospel, blues and jazz. He also did some acting, in movies such as “Blues Brothers 2000″, “Leaving Las Vegas”, and “Angel, Angel, down we go.” He also helped to raise $200 million for the United Negro College Fund.

Now, let’s get one thing straight, I’m no Lou Rawls fan. I’ve got nothing against his music, I’m just not a fan. But when an entertainer and human being of his caliber passes on, tributes must be paid. It’s sad that black musical pioneers such as himself are dying out and the only ones left to replace them are wannabe gangsters rapping about the gaudy jewellery and the cheap floozies they’ve got. Rest in peace Lou.

RIP Lou Rawls. Not a rap fan either.

  2. Leon Says:

Ditto. Rap, though a legimate form of music, tends to feature less talent than the other music forms.
