My thoughts on…Jamaica’s new "crime capital" status
January 4th 2006 -
When people think of Jamaica, a lot of things come to mind. Reggae music, white sand beaches, friendly people, and yes, even weed. Now it looks like “world’s most murderous nation” will be added to the list, as, according to 2005’s figures, Jamaica is now the crime capital of the world. Though the official tally has not been released by the police, local media houses agree that the death total is approximately 1,670, the highest in Jamaica’s history. That means, on average, 1 person is killed every 5 hours, an alarming rate for such a small country I’ll admit. This now means that South Africa and Columbia are safer than Jamaica. I know, it sounds crazy to me too. Needless to say, this will have a devastating impact on the country’s image. And all this on the heels of new year’s celebrations. Way to inspire hope for the new year guys!

Sad and Trinidad seems to be heading down the same path of destruction.Sometimes I wonder what’s happening to the Caribbean
